The blade is wrought-iron with a high carbon steel forged welded edge, and features a ridged, or peaked, spine. These peaked spines can be seen on several blades from the Coppergate archaeological excavations, with this example closely matching small find 2913.
The blade has been etched, to bring out the grain of the wrought-iron, and then polished to a mirror finish; producing a subtle and attractive end result.
It' set into an Ash handle, made from wood 'in the round'. The handles section is hexagonal for the half nearest the blade, and tear drop shaped in the last half. Soak in raw linseed oil, and then waxed with my own blend of beeswax/goose tallow/Neatsfoot oil.
Blade length: 80mm
Thickness at tang: 4mm
Total length: 21.5cm.
The sheath is a reproduction of Coppergate sheath 15617, and is made from veg tan leather. The seams are skived, and sewn with a whip stitch, creating a seam tight to the sheath body, as seen in the original. It is dyed with a blend of modern dyes, attempting to replicate one of the varied shades achievable with bark tanning, and finished with my blended beeswax.
